South Orangetown Schools Hold Budget, Board of Ed Votes Tuesday

Polls will open for South Orangetown School District voters in four locations from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. Tuesday.

The polling places are as follows:

  • District 1, Blauvelt -- South Orangetown Middle School
  • District 2, Orangeburg -- Tappan Zee High School
  • District 3, Tappan -- William O. Schaefer School
  • District 4, Grandview, Palisades, Piermont and Sparkill - Tappan Zee Elementary School
The ballot includes the 2013-14 district budget, which calls for a 3.46 percent tax levy increase. That is within the state mandated tax cap. The estimated tax increase for residents will be between 1.5 and two percent, pending details from the Orangetown Assessor's office.

The South Orangetown School Board also put a proposition on the ballot to use $975,000 from the District-Wide Renovations and Reconstruction Capital REserve Fund for security improvements to all of SOCSD's buildings. The money was already set to be used for facility projects, but by state law, spending capital reserves for a specific purpose requires voter approval. This measure would not impact the tax rate.

Two seats on the SOCSD board of education are also on the ballot Tuesday. Current School Board President Rosemary Pitruzzella and Dan Lamadrid are the only two candidates for the terms that run from July 1, 2013 to June 30, 2016. Lamadrid would be new to the board. Incumbent Steve Spiro chose not to run again.
