Nyack School Board Names Jason Friedman as Interim Superintendent

Jason Friedman will replace Valencia Douglas and act as Nyack Schools' superintendent for the 2010-2011 school year.

The Nyack School Board has decided on a temporary replacement for outgoing Nyack Schools superintendent Dr. Valencia Douglas.

Jason Friedman will take over the superintendent role for the 2010-2011 school year, announced Board of Education president Michael P. Lagana at a meeting tonight.

Friedman served as the Superintendent of East Ramapo Schools until his retirement in 2006. Prior to his superintendency there, Friedman served as Supervisor of Compensatory Education and Director of Elementary Education.

From January to June of 2008, Friedman served as an interim superintendent of Ardsley Schools.

"I've always viewed [Nyack] with a little bit of jealousy," Friedman said when accepting the position and addressing board members, parents and students.

"I'm so pleased that you're coming," Douglas later told Freedman. "And if there's anything you need, you have my word I'll support you."

In a printed statement, Friedman noted, "I am excited to be part of this forward thinking district and to contribute to the success of students and staff."

Lagana also addressed the ongoing search for a permanent replacement.

"The board will begin its search," Lagana said. "I don't know how long it will take—we want to make sure we find the perfect replacement."

The community will be able to contribute input at upcoming meetings, he added.
