Outdoor activities to do with the kids:

Campgaw Mountain is the perfect place for your young offspring to learn to ski. There is a magic carpet for the bunny hill and the instruction is good. They have eight trails and two lifts plus 3 surface lifts, but the vertical drop is only 269 ft. They also have tubing. (Check out Mt. Peter and Tuxedo Ridge as other skiing options.)

Bear Mountain State Park, located where Rt 9W and the Palisades Parkway meet, is one of the major attractions in Rockland County. There is an outdoor ice skating rink, as well as cross-country ski trails and sledding.

Eugene Levy Memorial Park, located on Rt. 45 in Pomona, near Matterhorn Nursery. There is an outdoor skating rink, nature walk and a good playground for young children.

Sparkill Skating Rink, located off Rt. 304, is a natural skating pond in the middle of Sparkill. It’s availability depends on the weather.

Indoor Activities to do with the kids:

The IMAX Theatre at the Palisades Center Mall, fourth Floor, West Nyack, NY, www.imax.com/palisades. Visit the deep sea or the land of the dinosaurs with this month’s IMAX original features: Under The Sea 3D and Dinosaurs Alive 3D, with Born to Be Wild 3D coming this spring.

The Palisades Center Ice Rink at the Palisades Center Mall, also on the fourth Floor West Nyack, NY. Daily Public skating except Thursday. Clinics and leagues are also available.

Sport-O-Rama, on College Rd in Monsey, almost where the road intersects with Rt. 59. In addition to ice skating, they offer youth hockey leagues and clinics, and also figure skating lessons.

The Challenger Center on Rt. 59 in Airmont. (Next to the Applebees). This is an educational center that functions as a “Space Camp” of sorts. Participants take different roles in a space shuttle and mission control, using teamwork to complete the tasks given to them. Public mission is on Feb. 20. (Every third Sunday.) Reservations highly recommended.

And thanks to Mommy Poppins (a great NYC website with ideas on if you feel like driving into the city), here are 50 more indoor activities for a rainy day.
