Girl Scouts visit “Salon BOCES”

The girls earned a badge along with self confidence

Girl Scout troops from West Nyack Elementary and Felix V. Festa spent several hours at Rockland BOCES’ Career and Technical Education Center (CTEC) on Friday, Jan. 13. Scouts learned about personal hygiene and grooming from cosmetology students as part of the “Looking Your Best” badge. The event was organized by CTEC’s cosmetology instructor Suzanne Tarulli and troop leader Enid Enderly.

The day started with a presentation from cosmetology students Nicole Fazio of Nyack and Ruth Campos of Suffern. The fifth- and eigth-grade Girl Scouts were each paired with a cosmetology student. Partners exchanged grooming tips, and the high school juniors and seniors washed and styled the Scouts’ hair and manicured their nails.

“Working with the Girl Scouts provides a great opportunity for the program,” said Tarulli. “Not only do the students get to put class skills into action, they learn how to communicate with clients.”

According to Tarulli, beauty shop management is an important part of the cosmetology curriculum. Students learn and practice skills on mannequins or peers. This one-on-one setup allowed the students to work closely with their client to get a sense of what they wanted and ensure they leave feeling their best.

“I was a Girl Scout myself and earned this very badge,” said cosmetology student Nicole Fazio of Nyack. “It’s a great feeling helping young girls achieve this badge as well as gain self-confidence.”

Rockland BOCES’ cosmetology program provides 11th and 12th grade students the opportunity to learn the latest styling techniques and skills. Courses are taught in fully equipped on-campus salons by industry certified instructors. The CTEC program prepares students for the New York state written and practical licensing exams.
