Extreme Makeover: Valley Cottage Elementary Playground Edition

The Nyack Board of Education gave special recognition to the Valley Cottage PTA for its successful fundraising efforts to build a new playground at the elementary school.

Nyack Superintendent Jim Montesano specifically thanked Playground Committee Chairs Christine Delaney and Sheree Newman.

“I don’t know if I’ve ever seen a more well-planned, fun and cooperative fundraising effort,” said Montesano.

The Playground Committee officially began their efforts in January, but the fundraising has been going on for over a year.

“It was in real need of replacement,” said Delaney. “Its really old.”

In order to raise the money needed, Delaney and Newman organized community events and promotions.

On June 1, the committee sponsored “Family Fun Day,” the last large fundraiser of the school year. The day offered field day games like tug-of-war and 3-legged-races, raffles with prizes that included Mets Tickets and Disney World Park Hoppers.

Another fundraising method was selling bricks to community members,  that could be personalized and designed by the brick’s owner. The committee achieved its goal of selling 100 bricks at $125 dollars each.

Through such action, the committee effectively raised $32,640.25 toward the new playground. Due to this impressive fund, the playground will be ready in September for the children.

The new park will have vast, fun, multi-age amenities such as multiple slides, rock walls, core-fitness stability features, and a new set of swings.

“We’re really excited and proud,” said Newman.

The committee is currently in the process of ordering pieces and starting construction, and looking forward to seeing all the fun that the children will experience.
