The Transcendental Meditation (TM) technique is a simple, natural, effortless procedure practiced 20 minutes twice each day while sitting comfortably with the eyes closed. The most widely practiced and most researched method of self-development, TM has proven effective in over 600 research studies conducted at more than 200 universities and research centers—including Harvard, UCLA, and Stanford.

Dr. Oz Comments on TM Research
Reduced anxiety and better sleep are just a few of the reasons physicians like Dr. Mehmet Oz recommend TM: “You can actually reduce your blood pressure significantly just using Transcendental Meditation,” he said. “You can also reduce cholesterol, atherosclerosis, obesity, and risk of stroke. In one randomized controlled study, TM reduced mortality, heart disease, and stroke by 47%. This kind of a stunning impact is unimaginable. But this is the tip of the iceberg. We all have within us a deep well of creativity, which we can access if we can settle down into those deep, calm places, those serene moments that Transcendental Meditation offers.”

Cliff Mendelsohn, a local Tompkins Cove artist agrees: “TM is unique in that it’s easy to learn, enjoyable to practice, and really refreshing. Everyone has within themselves a place of deep inner peace, a source of greater creativity and intelligence. TM is an easy way to tap into that. It’s a great way to ‘refresh’ the best of who you are.”

Over the past 20 years, the NIH has awarded more than $24 million to study the benefits of the Transcendental Meditation technique for improving brain functioning and cardiovascular health. The AMA’s journal Archives of Internal Medicine recently published a study showing the TM technique is highly effective in preventing the risk factors for high blood pressure, diabetes, and obesity.

Oprah and Staff  use TM to improve the workplace

More than five million people worldwide practice this simple technique — people of all ages, cultures, and religions. Celebrities including Jerry Seinfeld, Clint Eastwood, and Ellen DeGeneres are regular practitioners, and last summer, American icon Oprah Winfrey learned the technique and introduced it to her staff in Chicago, LA, and New York. “You can’t imagine what’s happened in the company,” said Oprah. “People who used to have migraines don’t. People are sleeping better. People have better relationships. People interact with other people better. It’s been fantastic.” Business owners across the country have had similar results.

Why the huge surge of interest? According to Sam Katz, a certified teacher since 1974 and one of the speakers at Friday’s JCC event, “There is a greater recognition of how debilitating stress is. It robs us of our peak levels of intelligence and creativity at work. Stress depletes energy, weakens health, and our capacity for happiness and inner peace.”
