Academy: Nyack Fencing Academy, 40 Lydecker St., Nyack
Coaches: Tyler Overk of Nyack; John Scarpino of New City
Recent competition: U.S. Fencing Association event at Cobra Fencing, Jersey City, NJ, where he received his first USFA rating (E).
Quotable: “I started with foil, but wasn’t that great, nothing special. John (Scarpino) hooked me up… (NFA) has helped me out a lot more than Westchester FA (where Vincent started his career). After only a couple of lessons with Tyler, I know a lot more. He’s the boss, oh god, yeah!”
Next competition: U.S. Fencing Association Summer National Qualifier, March 20, Westchester FA in Hawthorne.
Objective: Qualify for USFA Summer Nationals in July at Reno, NV, where some 7,000-8,000 fencers will converge.
History: Campione, who took seventh place in Jersey City against a high-quality field to earn his “E” rating, credits his mom, Florence, for getting him involved in the sport. “She came home one day and said, ‘Why don’t you try fencing,’ and I picked it up.” Younger brother Dominic, a freshman at Clarkstown North, is following in his brother’s footsteps.
