TZ Bridge Tolls Refunded to Drivers Turned Back Due to Accident

The New York State Thruway Authority waived or refunded tolls to 1,267 motorists who were forced to make U-turns due to the fatal accident on the Tappan Zee Bridge July 23

Motorists received a total of $6,054.50 in refunded or waived tolls, including $5,329.50 in refunds to 1,122 E-ZPass and $725 in collections from 145 drivers.

A driver entered the Thruway northbound going the wrong direction at Exit 10, causing a serious accident in which one person was killed. The accident is still under investigation, but the Thruway Authority is reviewing signs and pavement markings at Exit 10.

The night o the accident, all northbound lanes were closed due to the preliminary investigation. The concrete safety barrier separating the northbound and southbound lanes was opened to allow stranded passenger vehicles to make U-turns, though larger vehicles could not be turned. All motorists had to go through tolls to leave the bridge. Toll collectors did not charge drivers at that point, but the E-ZPass tolls were charged.
