Town Officials To Meet With County Sewer District

Supervisor Andy Stewart and others will look into any possible shared services during today's meeting

Orangetown Supervisor Andy Stewart and Councilmen Thomas Diviny and Paul Valentine will meet with the Rockland County Sewer District today.

Along with Joseph Moran, commissioner of Orangetown's Department of Environmental Management and Engineering, they will meet at Sewer District No. 1 in Orangeburg.

“We’re going to look into any shared services,” Diviny said. “We’re going to see if there’s anything we can join forces on, or if there’s any sort of duplication we might be able to eliminate.”

Stewart said he thinks it’s silly to have these two major facilities located so close to each other, but not talk to each other about what they’re doing.

“I sit on the Rockland County Sewer District Board and it’s a major facility right next to our facility,” he said. “We just want to make sure that we’re fully aware of how they operate in case there are mutual interests that we can work together on. It’s a broad brainstorming kind of approach. We would love if we could find a cost efficiency or a shared service. I feel like there ought to be some, but I don’t know exactly what they are, so we want to find out a little more about what they do.”

Stewart added the town just wants to compare notes and see how the county’s facility operates.

“We may be using the same vendors, we can compare pricing information. We may be having the same kinds of training for our employees, there may be an area where we can collaborate,” he said. “We just want to open that dialogue.”
