Village board meeting to focus on emergency alert system

Whether Nyack —and how much it will cost—will be the focus of tonight's village board meeting.

The idea comes on the heels of several local crises, like , a and a . The alert system would reach out to residents via phone and deliver an automated message or warning.

At past village board meetings, , and could be tied in with nearby municipalities and organizations—like the Nyack School District—to cut down on costs.

Tonight's village board meeting will be held at the Waldron Terrace Apartments, 15 Highview Court in Central Nyack. The meeting is set to begin at 7:30 p.m. Residents are encouraged to carpool; parking is limited.

Reverse 911 may alert business, but not residences using cell phones! We have a 9-1 on the fire siren system, for civil emergencies. Use that, then use Village web site to pinpoint the emergency and its location. No cost and full notice throughout Nyack.

What other towns use the system? Is it succesful?

Using the fire siren might disturb some residents. We wouldn't want to do that, would we?

Every other town & school district that is in the 21st century uses it with much success. Or we could post a lantern in the church bell tower. Worked for Paul revere.

Using the fire horn/bell is not a good idea. I dont think many residents in Nyack want to count out 9-1 to find out what kind of emergency they might have. The problem with cell phones is that people change their numbers and jump companies like changing underware. When I lived on castleheights I could barely hear the bell ontop of Empire's firehouse. The horns from downtown wouldnt wake anyone.
