Safely Get Rid Of Unwanted Prescription Drugs

Operation Medicine Cabinet accepts drugs at sites in New City, South Nyack — no questions asked.

Rocklanders who want to safely get rid of old, expired and unwanted prescription medications can drop them off at two locations on Saturday, Oct. 8, as part of the county's ongoing "Operation Medicine Cabinet" program.

Prescriptions drugs can be dropped off from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at:

All outdated, unused or unwanted medication including all controlled and non-controlled substances will be collected.
There are no questions asked.

No household hazardous waste is collected as part of this program.

Law enforcement officials say Operation Medicine Cabinet is designed to reduce the amount of prescription drugs that end up being sold on the street or abused by young people. Police say that Rockland County is being hit by a flood of prescription drugs that are being illegally obtained and sold on the streets to drug abusers.

Police encourage families to clean out their household medicine cabinets, and make sure that necessary medications are safely stored. On Monday, the Rockland County Narcotics Task Force announced charges against 40 people for illegal drugin dealing in the county — with many of the incidents involving the illegal sales of prescription drugs.

The drugs collected in Operation Medicine Cabinet are burned at state-approved facilities.
