Rockland Politicos to 'Condemn' Gun Map

Legislator Frank Sparaco and others will gather Friday to disavow The Journal News' interactive map of gun owners in Westchester and Rockland.

In a press release sent out late Wednesday afternoon, Rockland lawmakers announced they will join the growing ranks of public servants and Lower Hudson Valley residents angered by the recent publication of a map pinpointing local gun owners.

The Journal News published an interactive map on LoHud.com Dec. 22 of all legally-licenced pistol permit holders in Westchester and Rockland counties. The decision—one the newspaper continues to support—drew ire from a legion of readers and interest across the nation.

Sen. Greg Ball (R-Putnam/Westchester) assailed the map, and has vowed to prevent a similar map to chart Putnam—even if his efforts are illegal.

Now, politicos west of the Hudson are echoing sentiments akin to Sen. Ball's.

"Rockland County Legislator Frank Sparaco will announce a resolution to condemn the decision by The Journal News to post the names and addresses of lawful pistol permit holders in Rockland and Westchester Counties," the release reads.

Sparaco will be joined by Legislators Jay Hood, Jr., Aron Wieder, Toney Earl and Christopher Carey at the Friday confence. It is slated for 10:30 a.m. at the Rockland County Legislature Chambers at 11 New Hempstead Rd. in New City.

The map—and the ruckus surrounding it—sprung up shortly after the tragic shooting in Sandy Hook, Connecticut, which left dozens dead inside an elementary school, including several young children.

The Friday conference will also tackle a slate of other gun-related issues, like confidentiality for pistol permit applications, officials said. Lawmakers will also suggest a program that would freely distribute firearm cable safety locks to all legal gun owners in the area.

The conference will draw bipartisan support; the release notes Kristen
Stavisky, the Chairwoman of the Rockland Co. Democratic Party, Vincent
Reda, Chairman of the Rockland Co. Republican Party, John Perrotta,
Chairman of the Rockland Co. Independence Party and Edward Lettre,
Chairman of the Rockland Co. Conservative Party, will all be present.

after sandy hook dicks sporting goods took all assault rifles off the rack and as far as i know have still not sold them, and dicks sporting goods was the one who refused to sell a fire arm to the sandy hook shooter, and there is no "waiting period" for a shotgun or rifle in NYS

Thank You Legislator Day. A straight answer is rare these days and I thank you very much for the one you gave. I will be making those calls and learn fact from fiction. Siobhan, you have some points, but like I just learned it is hard sometimes to separate fact from fiction. People I assumed were "patronage" and others I never saw were. I would hate to point fingers, ruin somebodies career and be wrong. Just saying.
Mike January 03, 2013 at 12:21 PM
Would really like to see if this is true. I think that would be a tremendous conflict of interest on both sides.
Richie Himes January 03, 2013 at 01:00 PM
Why didn't our Clerk take a stand like Putnam? Especially since this rag did the same thing in 2006?
Pat January 03, 2013 at 01:14 PM
People have a right to know where the gun Nuts are!
Mike January 03, 2013 at 01:32 PM
Pat, your comment actually illustrates EXACTLY why the publication of the list by the JN is concerning. You indicate that because someone owns a gun that has been legally registered under current law is a "GUN NUT"
Andromachos January 03, 2013 at 01:52 PM
Even if the bullets were behind the counter wouldn't a person intent on mayhem just buy a box?
Charlotte G. Swift January 03, 2013 at 02:39 PM
Ira, I know of at least one woman who obtained her permit and handgun to protect herself from an ex-husband who had alrady tried once to kill her. Now he can find her - very easily. Today's J-N printed lies and misleading statements in response to "questions" from readers, like saying the article's author does not have a gun permit issued in Rockland or Westchester. That is because he lives in NYC and his permit was issued there. Just more lies from these bad bad people. I also know many cops are on the map who have retired but those they helped imprison are still around. Now they can find them. These are just the stories I personally know of. Many people are now at risk. Thank you Ed Day!
Charlotte G. Swift January 03, 2013 at 02:44 PM
It deserves attention. Ellen Jaffee's office supports what the J-N did and they told me so. She cares nothing for her constituents and just wants to legislate more against the legal gun owners. Where is her interactive map with the names and addresses of those who have committed crimes with illegally possessed firearms? There isn't any. Jaffe seeks to criminalize those who are obeying the law - and that could be you, Laura, anytime you disagree with Jaffee, or the J-N or anyone else in power. This outrage will be continued. And Siobhan - real problems? This IS a real problem! When the press becomes a lap dog for a political party, there is no way for truth to come out or the voices of those affected by it to be heard.
Charlotte G. Swift January 03, 2013 at 02:48 PM
I think you should publish your last name, Siobhan. What they did was wrong, and that is very different from whether there was a First Amendment ability to do it. BTW, what is your address? I think it should be posted so people know where to find you. I am sure that criminals are very interested in respecting all of your rights,so just publicize your address, and please put it on an interactive map. I mean, don't we all have a First Amendment right to know it?
Thomas Leonard January 03, 2013 at 03:36 PM
What's interesting is that the Journal News never asked why these people own guns. I own guns. Some are used to teach the Boy Scouts on gun use and safety, most are used for Western Single Action Six Shooter target contests or simple target practice, none are for self-defense.
Clarkstown life January 03, 2013 at 03:42 PM
Mike, you could also save a few bucks by not paying your workers prevailing wages.
Alan D. January 03, 2013 at 04:34 PM
For the safety of our children, we have a right to know who is hiding a gun in our neighborhood.
Richie Himes January 03, 2013 at 05:40 PM
Agreed Mike. Ad Hominem attacks are the desperate act of a person who has no facts to back up their position.
amerpatriot January 03, 2013 at 06:45 PM
Actually Jack, I am glad and thankful that our elected officials are provided with sinister crap like this. The security of our state rests largely in the hands of our officials, and it is their responsibility to identify and address issues of public fear and hysteria caused by terrorist organizers. The Journal attacked decent American citizens who are doing no wrong, and no harm to the state of NY and for that matter, the United States. I happen to respect citizens who obey the law. Thank you, Legisator Ed Day.
amerpatriot January 03, 2013 at 06:50 PM
People also have a right to know where anti-Americans are as well, but I didn't notice a map with your address on it. You're afraid of guns, ok, that doesn't make you a bad person. When you attack and deride your fellow citizens who have to a right to own and do own firearms, that does put you on the other side of the fence.
amerpatriot January 03, 2013 at 06:55 PM
I hate to say it, but I get a little worried about the antagonist "nut" who hates law-abiding citizens. I wish I knew where they lived. I look out my proverbial window and wonder, "what's this nut going to do next". Blow up my car? Throw rocks through my windows? Something worse? It's not the gun-owner who's going to key my car or break my windows. The burglar alarms on my house are not because I'm worried about my law-abiding neighbor - I can tell you that.
Jerry January 03, 2013 at 07:49 PM
I'm against what the Journal News did as it was irresponsible behavior. Although it was legal and protected by the first ammendment. I'm still more outraged by grandstanding politicians taking a "stand" on this non-issue, but all silent on the real problems that affect Rockland County. No one here will earn my vote because they are against the Journal News
Thomas Leonard January 03, 2013 at 08:03 PM
No one on that list is hiding anything. It's the people who are not on that list that maybe hiding guns.
SmilingJack Shadow January 03, 2013 at 08:08 PM
Pat, for your edification, Legal Gun Permit Holders as a segment of the population have the LOWEST history of criminal acts then any other segment of the population. They demonstrate a higher regard for human life, respect for others and employ better judgement then any other group. I see by the very nature of your labeling them as "Gun Nuts" you lack any of these standards. Further, keep in mind that the map also shows CRIMINALS where all the UNARMED homes are. Sadly the only "Nuts" here are The Journal News, it's reporters and people who refuse to comprehend FACTS about Legal Gun Owners.
SmilingJack Shadow January 03, 2013 at 08:15 PM
No one is HIDING a gun on your neighborhood. If they were hiding it then The Journal News would have been unable to put it on the map. Legal Gun Owners do NOT hide their firearms. They secure them ina locked and secure location as common sense and the law dictates. Your children are safer in a Neighborhood full of legal gun owners then in one without any. Most accidental shootings in the US are caused by ILLEGALLY OWNED GUNS, that means people without a Permit. What you should be saying, Alan, that for the safety of our children we have a right to know who is a convicted criminal, who has a history of mental illness, who is on prescription medication for mental illness, who has been admitted to a psychiatric hospital, who is a registered sex offender and WHO is really a threat??? Keep in mind, more children have been killed by DRUNK DRIVERS in their own neighborhoods then EVER by a Legally Owned GUN. But I don't see The Journal News posting a Map of all Drivers License Holders!
Richie Himes January 03, 2013 at 08:18 PM
You do but you should have to go to town hall and file a request instead of someone else doing it for you and posting the names of people who haven't broken the law all over the internet. Yo uknow why you don't know who has a handgun on your street previously? Because those people aren't acting irresponsibly. I'll give you a minute to let that sink in...
Mike Hirsch January 03, 2013 at 10:39 PM
The people who work for me are happy with their pay, as are the people who work for the landscapers that you employ as well as the restauranteurs that you frequent, your housekeepers, etc. The prevailing wage laws which require a union pay scale exist simply because of construction union influence upon our elected officials. They are harmful to our economy, costing our state millions and millions of dollars and tens of thousands of jobs each year, but don't take my word for it, ask the leadership of the Rockland Business Association. They'll tell you what the economic impact of these politically motivated laws are. Of course there is a place in our industry for union workers. The large scale projects need to be done by union contractors because they have the manpower. Projects under 5 million or so can be handled very well by non-union contractors at a savings of 40%. Ask the head of any non-profit how harmful these requirements are for their capital projects. There are currently hundreds of projects (both public and private) in NY state that are not moving forward because the various authorities cannot afford to pay the 40% union surcharge. They are simply bad laws and need to be amended.
amerpatriot January 04, 2013 at 07:52 PM
huh ?
Alan D. January 04, 2013 at 10:51 PM
All the guns used in these recent massacres were obtained legally. So how you distinguish who is a good law-abiding gun owner and who is not becomes irrelevant. We do not live in a vigilante society. Guns don't bring happy endings, only tragedy.
Atom January 07, 2013 at 12:28 PM
Pat ..." Gun NUTS?" Are you serious?? Do you think someone who retires from the police dept and legally registers his gun for his own protection is a "gun nut".or do you think the guy who buys a gun illegally and does NOT register it is the "GUN NUT??" Let me explain real slowly why these people on this JN map have guns... B E C A U S E T H E Y C A N .....it's the LAW!!
Atom January 07, 2013 at 12:38 PM
Using your logic Alan, "for the safety of our children", we need to know who in our neighborhood has had an abortion, so we can know who would knowingly kill children And " for the safety of our children" we need to know who is "hiding" arrest records "busted for smoking pot, or got a DWI", and perhaps who drinks alcohol at home in front of children.....lets make an interactive map of all those receiving a government handout....what, you don't think so...why not?? That's my money paying for their bills..Alan, when does it end, where is your line in the sand not to cross?
Charlotte G. Swift January 07, 2013 at 01:18 PM
Well, then you still don't know, and the map hadn't helped you a bit. Who is illegally-possessing guns in your neightborhood? Who has been convicted of committing crimes using them? How about the names/addresses of convicted felons of every stripe? Well, the convictions are also a matter of public record, but the J-N hasn't published them. That's a list that might help you - not the list of the people your kids could run to for protection should someone try to hurt them, - that's the list you have now. For the safety of your children? Really, that is ridiculous - say it out loud a few times and you will realize it, maybe. If that were your concern, you had the ability to FOIL the info from the County Clerk. Proof that that you are just parroting the only reason anyone from the left to try to justify this outrage, is that no one is in a better position to talk to their neighbors they want to send their children to. Rely on a map instead? You must be elitist from the left - those are the only people who would fear and vilify their law-abiding neighbors while hypocritically supporting the ACLU to "get justice" for prisoners who have been convicted of committing violent crimes. Hide your kids from the real problem.
amerpatriot January 07, 2013 at 03:47 PM
Alan , I respectfully submit that your inflammatory statements have no basis of fact. Agreed, we do not live in a vigilante society. But Americans do have the right to defend themselves. An automobile owner is not automatically a drunk driver. A gun owner is not automatically a vigilante. A vilgilante is an aggressor. Someone owning a firearm for protection is a defender, not an assailant. You have the right to decide not to be a gun owner. You do not have a right to demand that others choose as you do. If you don't want to defend yourself or your family in the best safest way possible, still that is your choice. You have that freedom. But you cannot mandate that everyone else has to be a victim. Every car that has killed someone due to drunk driving was owned legally as well.
Atom January 09, 2013 at 05:07 AM
HMmmmm..... Journal news subscribers since posting map .........Down 40%.......whats wrong with the other 60%????i I guess they like having having all their business known.. Lets see how long the JN stays in business.. Can't wait to see the advertisers flee ...
