Piermont Community Center May See More Usage

Yoga, Zumba classes may start up

The underutilized Community Center in Piermont—just off Hudson Terrace—may soon see more usage.

"The idea is to go ahead and rent out the space," explained Chris Sanders, Piermont's mayor.

The village's recreation commission, headed by Loreen McArdle, is putting together a plan to spruce up the building and attract more attention.

"We've had several meetings and talked with several organizations," McArdle said, noting the commission is looking at yoga and exercise instructors who may hold courses at the center. Music classes are also an option, she added.

The recreation committee noted instructors will be able to rent the space on an hourly basis, and are in charge of filling their own classes. Music classes will be held on a session basis with a flat rate. A portion of the money accrued will go to the instructor, and some to the village.

will also carry out limited background checks on instructors to ensure they're qualified and in good standing, added chief Michael O'Shea.

Still, the building's poor condition remains a problem, and may deter possible renters, Sanders said. A portion of building has been painted by community service workers, and the DPW is preparing to fix up the floors—but the bathrooms remain inaccessible to the handicapped.

"The restrooms are supposed to be in compliance," explained village attorney Walter Sevastian, who noted their inaccessibility could be a legal problem.
