Nyack Playground, Memorial Park Bathrooms See Work

Village orders replacement playground items; bathroom pumps under construction

As Nyack works to , mayor Jen Laird-White is communicating with anxious mothers and fathers.

"Many parents of young children are writing or calling to ask about the playground in Memorial Park," Laird-White said in a release posted to the village website. "During a routine inspection it was determined that several playground equipment pieces were not only substandard but were, in fact, dangerous. The village did the only responsible thing it could do and removed them immediately."

Laird-White said the village is "working as quickly as [it] can" to replace the missing structures with new ones. Replacement pieces were ordered less than a day after the playground was dismantled. "We are hoping for delivery any day now," she continued.

Playground equipment can cost between $20,000 and $50,000, the mayor said, but the village has already had residents offer to helm a fundraising effort. Public funds will be taken from the village's contingency fund.

"As a mom who logged many hours on that playground when my kids were small, I know how frustrating this must be," Laird-White added.

On a similar note, Memorial Park's public bathrooms are currently closed to repair pumps.

"We will have temporary bathrooms on site for public use during the repairs," village officials said. "We appreciate your patience while we complete this work."
