Nyack's Oldest Home: Still Deteriorating

Owner, bank not taking action; village may tear down

Nyack's oldest home, the John Green house at 23 Main St., is only getting worse—and the historic home's owner and bank are not stepping up to the plate.

The nearly two-century-old house has been neglected for years, ever since the owner moved to Florida, stopped upkeep and expressed a complete disinterest in the property. The home still has a morgage of over $400,000 on it, and the bank involved is eschewing responsibility, too, Nyack officials said.

Last year, village officials noted the house had become a safety hazard, and had to either to be or torn down.

Nyack officials appeared at a court hearing earlier this month to resolve the matter, but the involved bank did not show up. "It's a mess," explained Walter Sevastian, village attorney. "The bank just dropped the foreclosure."

The judge offered a quick remedy: the homeowner has 60 days to start the necessary renovations and 90 days to finish. And if the timeline is not followed, the village will take over operations and charge the homeowner on their tax bill.
