Nyack Joins Call for Desal Issues Conference

The Village of Nyack became the latest municipality to call for the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) to hold an issues conference on United Water's proposed Haverstraw Water Supply project.

The Nyack Board of Trustees passed a resolution calling for an issues conference at its meeting Thursday night. Mayor Jen Laird-White and Trustees Doug Foster and Louise Parker voted for the measure. Don Hammond and Marie Lorenzini were absent.

"It has no impact on us, but our neighboring communities asked us to support this," White said. "It was less about whether desal as a good idea than it was that our neighboring communities want additional study."

The full resolution can be found here on the Village of Nyack website.
The Orangetown Town Board voted for a similar resolution May 28. Haverstraw is the only one of Rockland County's four towns not to come out in support of an issues conference. Piermont, South Nyack and Upper Nyack are among the villages who are supporting it.

The issues conference would more closely examine United Water's plan to address Rockland County's water needs by taking it from the Hudson River through a desalination plant.
