Outdoor Nyack Farmer's Market Opens Thursday

Nyack Mayor Jen Laird-White will preside over the ribbon-cutting ceremony as the 2013 Nyack Farmer's Market  moves back outdoors 8 a.m. Thursday at Riverspace. 

Nayck's first indoor farmer's market closed May 2. Market Day begins with kickoff ceremony including Orangetown Supervisor Andy Stewart, Assemblywoman Ellen Jaffee and Nyack Village Trustee Marie Lorenzini.

"As Chair of the Assembly Task Force on Food, farm and Nutrition Policy, I'm determined to ensure that everyone, especially those who are underserved, has access to nutritious food grown on farms in New York State," Jaffee said. "The Nyack Farmer's Market is a vital partner in htis mission. By promoting New York's farmers and food producers, the Nyack Farmer's Market increases access to fresh local food, helps our seniors and families improve their health, boosts our economy and brings our diverse community together. I look forward to another fruitful, fun-filled outdoor season."

Chef George DeMarsico of Xavier's Piermont will conduct cooking demonstrations and speak about local food from 9 a.m. to noon. Silly Pencil will do caricatures from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. and Jeffrey Friedberg and the Bossy Frog Band will play from 11 a.m. to noon.

"Now in its 16th year, the Nyack Farmer's Market is one of the oldest markets in the tri-state area -- a good example of how foward-looking this community is," said Nyack Chamber of Commerce President Scott Baird. "Today we're proud to support local, eco-friendly farmers, artisans and food producers. It's a great way to boost business and protect our environment."

All participants in the Farmer's Market are members of the Nyack Chamber of Commerce. Rich Concklin of The Orchards of Concklin, Joy Macy of Bluefield Farm Flowers, Debra Sadowsky of Mostly Myrtle's, Wil Tyler of Pie Lady & Son and Pam Moskowitz of the Nyack Chamber make up the 2013 Nyack Famer's Market Advisory Board. 

This year's market is sponsored by GrenMountain Energy Compan and Green Meadow Waldorf School.

The market is open daily from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. with 21 vendors providing cut flowers, fruits and vegetables, free-range eggs, frsh pickles, baked goods, honey, maple syrup, coffee, gluten-free baked goods, pies, cookies, gourmet seafood, pasta with homemade sauces, humus, Middle Eastern delicacies and local wines and ciders among other products.
