Lowey Optimistic About Federal Funds For TZ

Congresswoman hopeful Tappan Zee Bridge can get federal monies in next round of financing

Congresswoman Nita Lowey (D-Westchester/Rockland) said on Thursday she has been speaking with U.S. Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood about getting for the new Tappan Zee Bridge project. She said there are billions of dollars in the TIFIA (Transportation Infrastructure Finance and Innovation Act) portion of the transportation bill that was just passed in Congress.

“I do believe the money will be allocated,” she said. “This bridge, we hope, will be built.”

New York State and Thruway Authority officials applied for $2 million for the project but it was not selected in the funding round held in April.

[“I do believe the money will be allocated,” she said. “This bridge, we hope, will be built.”] Looks like she goes along with "hope and change" of the President, doesn't it?

Gee it's so nice of her to throw us these little breadcrumbs, isn't it? She needs to be educated: the Tappan Zee Bridge is an important part of the interstate highway system. The interstate highway system is THE FEDERAL GOVERNMENT's responsibility. The state shouldn't have to pay a dime for it. Consider: a LOT more than just the NY area would be affected if that bridge ever closed for any reason. We have TONS of interstate traffic coming from all over the nation, bringing equipment and supplies for construction projects up north - all the way to Canada; furniture and farm products coming up from the south to supply the entire northeast corridor. If you want to see whom the bridge services, let's close it down for a week. The entire east coast would grind to a halt. So why should the brunt of expense be on NY? Just because this part of the interstate highway system happens to be in that state? And as for those toll increases? Let's see how they impact the prices of EVERYBODY's goods and services should they rise that dramatically. Remember, trucks pay by axle or by height. Their toll costs are many times a passenger car's. Do you really think businesses are just going to absorb that extra cost? This bridge services virtually the entire nation in its role as part of the FEDERAL INTERSTATE HIGHWAY SYSTEM. The feds should be picking up the entire tab, and tolls should not be raised at all.
