Clarkstown: No Traffic Allowed On Roads

Local small businesses also ordered to close.

The Town of Clarkstown has ordered all traffic off the roads from midnight to 6 p.m. Sunday because of Hurricane Irene.

Town Supervisor Alex Gromack, who authorized a state of emergency in the town because of the massive storm, said the order also calls for all business to close in the town. The order, however, does not cover facilities such as hotels and motels, where residents could be seeking shelter from the storm.

Clarkstown police Chief Michael Sullivan said residents should use extreme caution because of the storm and stay off the roads. He  said no one should be driving for non-essential trips.

Sullivan said travel on the roads should essentially be limited to emergency personnel and highway crews responding to storm problems.

Gromack said that with the order to keep traffic off the roads, businesses should not be opening and should not be requiring employees to be on the roads.
