No Vote on Piermont Library Budget

Residents can vote for trustees Wednesday, Dec. 7

For the third year in a row, Piermonters will not vote on their 's operating budget.

Since the budget for the upcoming fiscal year does not exceed the current year's, it will not be put to a vote, per library policy.

The 2012-2013 expenses come in at $327,875. Taxpayers will kick in $275,000; the remaining funds are provided by the South Orangetown School District and through, fees, fines and donations.

"Even though the amount of money contributed by the village has remained steady over the past three years, the book, DVD and other collections, services and events have increased significantly," said Richard Benfield, a current library trustee. "This year, the library added a part-time children's librarian."

Voters will have the chance to cast a ballot for trustees on Wednesday, Dec. 7. There will be no heated battles, however—three candidates are running for three positions.

Marian Armstrong, who was appointed trustee two years ago, is running to complete her term. She replaced Piermonter Miriam Rapport, who passed away. Edward Nelson is seeking a third term, and Donna Riley is seeking a second term.

Not on the ballot is Bruce Tucker, who will remain a trustee; he was appointed the position by the board to finish the term of Mark Jacobs, who resigned.

The board of trustees has nine members who serve three-year terms.

Unlike past years, the vote will be held at Piermont Library, and not at . Polls open at 11 a.m. and close at 8 p.m.
