Smoke Condition at South Orangetown Middle School; Students Evaluated

An after-school smoke scare brought out paramedics, police

A smoke condition at South Orangetown Middle School in Blauvelt Thursday evening evacuated a portion of the school, and led paramedics to check out a handful of affected student.

The incident occurred at about 5:30 p.m. while middle school students were preparing for this weekend's play, Li'l Abner.

South Orangetown Ambulance Corp responded—along with police—and took several students into the cab for evaluation.

"It's preemptive," explained Dan Sullivan, the school's dean of students, who noted no students sustained injuries or were overcome by the smoke.

Students were back in the building at around 6 p.m.

Authorities are still investigating the cause of the smoke.
