Search Resumes For TZ Jumper; Little Hope

Police say efforts a recovery, not rescue

While suicide attempts off the Tappan Zee Bridge are not always sucessful—in July, a man who jumped naked —authorities are calling the search for Scott Uzzo a recovery, not a rescue.

The 24-year-old Hawthorne man at about 2:53 p.m. into choppy waters and high winds. Rescue authorities on both sides of the river had to call off the search after about one hour, and did not hit the Hudson again until Thursday morning.

"At this point, it's not a rescue, it's a recovery," explained J.P. Natkin, Westchester Deputy Fire Coordinator, at the scene Wednesday. "It doesn't make sense to jeopardize any more people. You'd get hypothermia fast out there. And the tide is out."

Still, state troopers resumed combing the waters in Thursday's a.m. Uzzo's family is aware of the search, and have been talking with authorities; his brother arrived at the bridge shortly after Uzzo jumped, and was later escorted to state police barracks in Tarrytown.

Internet research reveals Uzzo is a graduate of Westlake High School, and played football there.
