The Orangetown Police Department is taking part in the DEA's 5th Prescription Drug Take Back Day today.
From 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. you can bring unwanted or expired prescription medications to Orangetown police headquarters, where they are being collected for proper disposal.
The effort is designed to get unneeded prescription drugs out of homes so they won't end up in the hands of drug abusers. Police say that in many instances, unwanted medications get into the hands of family members who either abuse the drugs or sell them to others to be abused.
In Rockland County, the sale and abuse of prescription drugs by teenagers and other young people has been recognized as a major problem. Rockland's Operation Medicine Cabinet each month provides drop off points at the Rockland County Sheriff's Department and local police agencies so that residents can safely dispose of prescription drugs.
