[UPDATE) Rockland Man Dies in Palisades Parkway Crash

Car hits tree on New Jersey section of parkway.

A 25-year-old Rockland County man was killed early this morning in a crash on the Palisades Interstate Parkway in New Jersey.

Palisades Interstate Parkway Police said said the man, a Garnerville resident, was found in a four-door Honda that had slammed into a tree along the northbound parkway in the Alpine, NJ, section, about two miles north of the Exit 2 interchange.

The victim was identified this afternoon as Daniel McWeeney, 25, of Garnerville.

Police said a passing motorist called 911 at about 2:53 a.m. to report a car had struck a tree at the entrance to the State Line Lookout. Officers arrived to find a the Honda with heavy passenger side damage caused by striking a tree.  The driver was trapped in the vehicle and pronounced deceased by paramedics who soon arrived at the site of the wreck.

The cause of the collision is still under investigation. Police said it does not appear that any other vehicles were involved. Police said an autopsy is being conducted by the Bergen County Medical Examiner's Office as part of the investigation.
