Recap: Monday's TPZ Bridge Incidents

Monday on the bridge: a jumper saved, and an automobile accident death.

Monday—in the span of just a few hours—two incidents on the Tappan Zee Bridge had rescue authorities from both sides of the crossing acting quickly and in tandem.

At approximately 1 p.m., 53-year-old Michael L. Haring of Cambridge, Maryland was killed after exiting his vehicle on the bridge's superstructure. Haring was pinned between his trailer and the bridge's side barrier; authorities pronounced him dead at the scene of the accident.

Approximately three hours later, 29-year-old Matthew Casterella of White Plains jumped from the bridge's mid-span—and lived through the impact. Westchester and Rockland authorities responded to the jump, including the fire departments of Nyack, Central Nyack and Piermont. Casterella was pulled from the Hudson by Tarrytown and Sleepy Hollow rescue units and transported to Westchester Medical Center with serious back injuries.
