Police: Man In Car Approached Boy In Tappan

9-year-old not harmed.

Orangetown police are investigating a suspicious incident this afternoon in which a 9-year-old was approached by strangers in a car in Tappan.

The boy was on a Washington Street sidewalk when he was approached at about 4 p.m. by an unknown man who was a passenger in a small, silver sedan. The boy was not injured in the incident.

The man in the car — described a white, in his 20s, with short-cropped black hair — asked the boy if he wanted candy. When the boy said "No," the man then asked him if he liked candy.

The car drove off on Washington Street toward the Sparkill area. No description of the driver of the car is available.

Police said the checked the area but could not locate the car involved. Orangetown police alerted other police agencies in the area about the incident and also alerted local school officials.
