Police: Manhunt Catches Possible Shooter

Investigators believe dispute led to early-morning gunfire. Victim at Nyack Hospital with multiple wounds, police say.

Update [12:10 p.m.]

Police have arrested Eric Goods, the Valley Cottage resident who is a person of interest in this morning's shooting at the Mountainview Condominiums.

Goods was apprehended after an hours-long manhunt that utilized a helicopter, police dogs and police from several departments. Clarkstown Schools were placed on lockdown while Goods was at large, but have since reopened.

Goods was captured on foot on Mountainview Avenue in Valley Cottage at about 11:30 a.m. a short distance south of the Mountainview Condo complex. Police said Goods is being taken to Clarkstown police headquarters in New City, where he will be processed.

No charges have been filed yet, police said.

Goods was arrested as he came out of the woods along Mountainview Avenue.

Original story [7:36 a.m.]

A Valley Cottage man has been shot and a neighbor is being sought this morning as a "person of interest" in the gunfire at Mountainview Condominiums this morning, according to .

Police said the shooting victim, a man who lives at the sprawling condo complex, was shot multiple times outside 585 Sierra Vista Lane at 5:50 a.m. Sgt. Harry Baumann said the victim was able to talk to police and paramedics and was taken to for treatment, where he is listed in stable condition.

Baumann said investigators believe the incident was possibly the result of a neighbor dispute, but the nature of the dispute is still uncertain. One of the men was walking a dog at the time of the shooting.

The victim was shot with a handgun, Baumann said. Capt. Robert Mahon said the handgun used in the shooting has been recovered, along with a black hoodie sweatshirt that was believed to have been worn by the gunman.

Baumann said the man who fired the gun was seen running west of the condo complex. In the search, Baumann said police are looking for a Mountainview resident who has been described as a person of interest, 53-year-old Eric Goods.

As of 7:15 a.m., Baumann said Clarkstown Police and its canine units, along with officers and Rockland County's emergency helicopter, are searching the area of the condominiums and into nearby Nyack in hopes of locating the man who did the shooting. State Police were also involved with the search, along with a canine unit from Westchester.

Baumann said Clarkstown police were getting ready to send automatic telephone messages to residents of the area about the shooting and the ongoing manhunt.

Mahon said police have Goods' cell phone number and are trying to reach him. He said Clarkstown hostage negotiators would try to speak with Goods in hopes of having him turn himself in for questioning in connection with the shooting.

The investigation turned the Mountainview complex into an armed camp, with a road block of Clarkstown and State Police officers at the entrance to the complex.

The investigation also prompted a lockdown of Clarkstown schools, where children were attending summer programs or at pre-season practices for school sports.

Thanks again to the patch for keeping me informed of whats happening in the area!I dont have cable or get the paper so its so helpful to get to see local news on the patch.
I was hearing the helicopter circle overhead for almost an hour now (thinking at first that it must be an emergency air lift for the hospital...but it just kept going round & round) So I went straight to this site and viola! Now I know...and I'm a bit freaked out to leave the house. I hope they catch the guy.... Is it just me or are people really wiling-out a lot lately??? Hope the guy who got shot is ok.

Why is the POLICE WATCH , telephone dispatch, reverse 911 taking so long-----iti is over three hours since this started. I spoke with the Clarkstown Police at about seven AM d was told toexpect a phone all shortly!

I was listening to the chopper for the last several hours, put on my scanner and was still wondering what happened (did not logon to news sites until now, I'm afraid). However, once again, what is the HARM in the OPD letting the local Nyack folks be aware....this is absolutely ridiculous...

Just discovered the Patch - agree with a previous commenter - your coverage was much more thorough than the Journal News - your experience & contacts shows!! I live in Mountainview & heard the shots (BTW - there were 4 shots), so it was particularly important for me to follw this news. Thanks.

I just found you about 10 minutes ago and immediately signed up. What a great site and a wonderful service to Rocklanders. I hope the Patch is hugely successful and is around for a long time. I think my subscription to the J-N can be cancelled.

Rockland seems to be changing. I have lived here for over 25 years and I'm seeing the greatest change within this very last year. Even driving is different. People are not as patient and are quite agitated. Sad to say but it's time to be extra careful.

Aerial of United Water's proposed water treatment plant location
West Nyack June 13, 2013 at 07:03 pm
This issue is not whether Rockland County will need more water in the future which it may nor is itRead More the fact that Hudson River water can be made drinkable which it can. The primary issue is the company that wants to run the project. United Water has been a lousy corporate neighbor to West Nyack allowing old homes to deteriorate then tearing them down and doing nothing to stop the flooding south of the reservoir. If we allow them to construct the Haverstraw project they will do nothing to protect the area and if anything goes wrong they will blame someone else. When United Water starts to take responsibility for its actions and manages their facilities so as to have a minimal impact on the community then maybe they should be allowed to build Haverstraw but don't count on it.
Caleb June 13, 2013 at 10:23 pm
Untrue. Perhaps if United Water wasn't sending over 2 million gallons a day from Deforest Lake toRead More they're customers in Bergen County we would not have this shortage. Hydrologists have shown that there is enough water regularly collected in Rockland's reservoirs and aquifers for our current and growing needs. Many of the "facts" that United Water is putting forward are outdated, and are based on they're own mismanagement of our water basin. Lets remember that United Water has repeatedly been removed as a water provider of major cities throughout this country (6+ last time I checked, notably even from Camden NJ) for mismanagement of water resources. I think its a prudent choice to look into a plant that we will be stuck paying for for the next 4 years from a company that has repeatedly lied and provided water with toxin levels high above legal limits to they're customers. Better safe than sorry.
John Taggart June 13, 2013 at 11:59 pm
Rockland has grown to the point that it needs more water. Terminating the flow of a river and takingRead More the water resources away from other communities (stealing what we need) isn't going to happen.
