Police: Valley Cottage Man Charged With DWI In Hit-And-Run Accident In New City

Accident victim chases after driver, detains him for police.

A Valley Cottage man involved in a hit-and-run accident in New City was chased and detained by a victim in the accident and then charged with drunken driving, according to .

The incident began aobut 9:30 p.m. on Monday, when police said two cars collided at Little Tor Road and Germonds Road in New City. A driver reported to police that his car had been struck and the other car involved left the scene of the accident without stopping.

Police said the accident victim pursued the fleeing car, driven by Asghar Ghulum, 56, of Valley Cottage. When he realized he was being chased, police said Ghulum turned off his headlights in an effort to evade his pursuer.

Ghulum's car, however, ran off the road at 12 Grand St., New City, where police said the accident victim detained Ghulum until town police officers arrived. Police said Ghulum failed a field sobriety test and was taken to Clarkstown police headquarters in New City, where he failed a chemical breath test for alcohol.

Ghulum was released later in the morning pending a Town Court hearing on  Jan. 4, 2012, to answer the charges of driving while intoxicated, a
misdemeanor, reckless driving, a misdemeanor, and leaving the scene
of a property damage accident, traffic infraction.
