Police Searching for Suspect in Nyack Bank Robbery Attempt

The Trustco Bank branch in Nyack was robbed in August and October of last year.

Police are searching for a man who attempted to rob the Trustco Bank branch in Nyack at 9:25 a.m. today.

The man approached a locked door of the bank and made a gesture at his waistband indicating he had a gun, said Orangetown police Sgt. Henry Reynolds. Bank employees would not let the man in and he fled on foot.

The suspect is described as a black male in his 20s or 30s, about 5'10", with a beard. He was wearing a light gray or white hooded sweatshirt and sweatpants, black gloves, and a black baseball cap. He also carried a black backpack and had a black mask or bandanna he used to cover his face.

The bank, which opened in 2010, was robbed in August and October. The August heist netted about $14,000; the October robbery about $65,000. Police arrested Richard Williams, a 39-year-old North Carolina resident and former Nyack resident, in connection with the August event.

The branch is located in a building that sits just before an overpass of the New York State Thruway on the eastbound side of Route 59.

The bank's location on the outskirts of town makes it an attractive target for robbery. "It's on the border of Orangetown and Clarkstown, and Orangetown [police] cars spend most of their time downtown," Reynolds said.
