Police: Nanuet Man Fired 5 Shots From Rooftop

21-year-old told police he was shooting at deer coming onto property on Cottage Place.

As  were on heightened alert for potentially violent incidents because of the , police say a 21-year-old Nanuet man was arrested early this morning after firing five shots from a shotgun on the roof of his home.

The resident of 31 Cottage Place, 21-year-old Shashi Ramsaroop, told police he was shooting at deer that had wandered onto the property. Police said no one was injured and there were no reports of damage related to the shooting.

Town officers in nine Clarkstown police cars went to 31 Cottage Place after receiving reports of shots being fired on Cottage Place at about midnight. By the time officers arrived, police said Ramsaroop had come down from the roof and had stopped firing.

Police said Ramsaroop fired five rounds from the 12-guage shotgun, with some of the shots going over the roofs of nearby homes. No deer were shot, police said.

Ramsaroop was arrested without incident and he's being held at Clarkstown Police Headquarters in New City pending arraignment today. Police said the shooting was illegal, especially since it was within 500 feet of other residences.

Charges against Ramsaroop include:

Reckless endangerment

Prohibited use of a weapon

Illegal hunting

Illegal discharge of a firearm

Clarkstown police, like police throughout the nation, were especially on alert for potentially violent incidents because of the deadly mass shooting at a midnight showing of the the new Batman movie in Aurora, Colo. Police say 12 people were killed and dozens of others were shot and wounded when a gunmen opened fire in a showing of "The Dark Knight Rises."

James Holmes, 24, has been arrested in the shootings.

Clarkstown police had extra presence at Palisades Center mall in West Nyack on Friday night for the movie's showings. No unusual incidents were reported in connection with the movie at Palisades Center.

Maybe someone should remind you that having an Indian name doesn't make you "from India" it just makes your heritage Indian, and it also doesn't make one illegal to be in this country. Maybe someone also needs to remind you that this country has way to much racial tension and idiots like you keep the fuel pouring onto the fire. Unless you know this man personally, don't assume he is illegal or from India.

Gee Liz I really hope you do not mean that. Firing a weapon in a populated area either in the air or at deer has nothing to do with good or bad intentions, it's pure stupidity. Maybe you should broaden your horizons and hope for a little more common sense before you condone idiotic actions like this again.
