Police: Man with Handgun Robs Woman in Nyack

Armed robbery occurred just after midnight on Tuesday

A man brandishing a handgun robbed a woman of $20 in downtown Nyack early Tuesday morning, said.

The man approached a woman sitting in her car in a parking lot off Main Street at about 12:06 a.m. and demanded money while holding the gun, authorities said.

"The suspect got $20 from the victim and fled towards Gedney Street," said Det. Lt. Jim Brown.

The suspect is described as a white male, or possible light-skinned Hispanic, standing about 5'8" and of medium build. He was dressed in a dark hooded sweatshirt and had a dark bandanna or cloth covering his face, Brown said.

Police canvassed the area with a K-9 unit from Bergen County Police following the incident, but could not locate the suspect.

People who witnessed the robbery, or have information about it, are urged to call the Orangetown Police Detective Bureau at (845) 359-2121.

I thought there was supposed to be adequate patrol to provide additional protection for the parking meter attendants who would be walking the streets alone. This is beyond disturbing. No response from our town government?

Does Orangetown have a K-9 unit? Given recent events, I think it is probably time for the people of Nyack to start thinking about some full-time, permanent police protection. Orangetown does a most commendable job (as evidenced by their quick work in apprehending the juvenile arsonist who caused 100 grand in property damage a couple of weeks ago), but Town of Orangetown is a large area. They cannot continue to devote a disproportionate amount of police resources to Nyack. There comes a point where it becomes unfair to the rest of the residents of Orangetown.

PLEASE MAKE SURE TO OFFER TO WALK YOUR FRIENDS TO THEIR CARS, AND WHEN THE SAME IS OFFERED TO YOU, ACCEPT! Look out for each other, be aware of your surroundings (ESPECIALLY after you're already in your car and think you're 'safe') and if you see anything strange, SAY SOMETHING! Its best to trust your gut...it's usually right. I fully agree with the mention of the possible dangers the new parking meters pose...many of THOSE meters are in even darker parking lots than where this crime happened. Maybe some of those brilliantly bright lights they just lit on main street could be put in some of those dark lots too??? But things like this can happen anywhere at any time, so lets all watch out for each other, don't get paranoid, but do say safe. Maybe all these crazy things happening in our town are wake-up calls to make more of an effort to get to know your neighbors so we can build a strong community wherein maybe someone who thinks they need money THAT badly, might be able to just be humble and ask someone instead of using a gun. And Nyack is just the type of wonderful town that has such amazing potential to join together and become an unbreakable community of people who care for each other like a gigantic extended family (with maybe some dysfunctional members as all families do) ...guns just don't fit here...seems so out of place!
