New Jersey man arrested in Grand View, charged with two misdemeanors

A New Jersey man was arrested in Grand View Saturday night and charged with assault and driving while intoxicated, according to .

Police were tipped off after an officer heard a woman in distress at 10:40 p.m.

"A South Nyack-Grand View Police Officer on patrol heard a woman screaming from inside a vehicle, as he passed in the opposite direction on River Road," said chief Robert Van Cura.

The officer then saw the male driver throw his right hand into the female passenger's face, and also observed the car cross the double yellow line, Van Cura said.

After pulling the driver over, the officer saw the woman had "a large amount of blood on her nose and face," Van Cura said.

Police arrested 57-year-old Peter Velaquez of Dumont, NJ, charging with with assault in the third degree and driving while intoxicated, both misdemeanors.

Velazquez was released and is scheduled to appear in Grand View Justice Court on Sept. 24 at 7 p.m.
