Pile Up on Thruway in Nyack Leaves at Least Six Cars Damaged

Only minor injuries; traffic flowing smoothly again

An accident on the Nyack portion of the Thruway at about 1:30 p.m. Thursday left at least six cars with major damage and several drivers shaken.

The pile up occurred just over the Tappan Zee Bridge in the west-bound lanes. Police are still investigating what caused the accident; those involved suffered only minor injures.

Authorities closed down the west-bound lanes while clearing the site, and traffic on the bridge came to a standstill for about half-an-hour.

State Police, EMT units and Thruway Authority workers transported the damaged cars and affected drivers to the wide shoulder adjacent to the exit 10 ramp in Nyack.

I'm not sure why the State does not issue speeding tickets via cameras mounted on the bridge. I think the average speed on the bridge is 65 or worst. It's like a race to see who gets off the bridge first!

I don't know why either. I think I've seen the most dangerous drivers on that bridge or just before or after the toll plaza. Some speed cameras might really cut the bad habits, and bring in some extra revenue.

I remember a time I was crossing over to Nyack and some guy comes up next to me in a (laughably) modified little Civic and drove along next to me wanting to race.... Really? On a bridge with lots of traffic???? People never cease to amaze me with their stupidity.
