Piermont Police: Watch for FEMA Impersonators

Make sure inspectors have credentials, authorities say

In the wake of in Piermont, some crooks are .

FEMA representatives are currently making their way around the village and visiting homeowners who have requested assistance—but police say individuals impersonating federal employees are not uncommon.

"A disaster brings out the best in people, but sometimes brings out the worst, too," said Michael O'Shea, Piermont's chief of police.

, along with the Rockland County Office of Fire and Emergency Services, is warning residents about possible hucksters.

"Be cautious about letting unfamiliar visitors into [your] homes even though they may introduce themselves as inspectors," a recent press release reads. "Inspectors are required to display their picture identification badges at all times."

In order to verify the inspectors' credentials ,authorities say homeowners should ask for the following information:

  • The individual's registration case number that was provided to them during the registration process
  • The inspector's identification number
