Piermont Police Prepare for Storm, Flooding

The high tide and heavy rains anticipated early next week create concerns of flooding, particularly in Piermont.

Piermont Police Chief Michael O'Shea pointed out an additional concern related to the arrival of Hurrican Sandy in the area late Sunday or early Monday.

The full moon could make flooding worse with the heavy rains that could last through Wednesday.

"We are preparing for the storm," O'Shea said. "I spoke with the Highway superintendent and the fire chief. We work closely on these matters. We are in a low-lying coastal area with flooding.

"The problem we face is, with the full moon, we are going to have a high tide, anyway. We would caution residents to prepare to move vehicles to higher ground."

O'Shea suggested residents make sure they have all they need before the storm hits, including items such as flashlights, bateries, food and water for two or three days and medications.

"With heavy rains and high winds, that brings flooding and power outages," O'Shea said. "We will have additional staffing on. We will be prepared to close roads. With the advanced warking, for the last couple of storms, we've been well-prepared. We are lucky with the highway and fire departments, we work well toghether.

"Unfortunately, we're used to this type of flooding because of our location. We're used to weather emergencies."
