Piermont Police Issue 37 Tickets in One Week for Seatbelt Violations

Crackdown is part of state-wide campaign

Buckle Up New York—a state-wide initiative that and punishes drivers who don't—is in full swing, and have already nabbed dozens of non-belted drivers. The program kicked off last Monday and runs until June 5.

"We've had 90 percent compliance," explained Michael O'Shea, Piermont's chief of police. So far 37 tickets have been issued, and enforcement areas include Routes 9W and 340, Valentine Avenue and several side streets.

O'Shea noted that the number of people who wear their seatbelts decreases in the evening and late hours, however. "We're going to continue to enforce," he added.
