Piermont Police Crack Down on Drunk Driving, Illegal Trucks

DWI patrols upped for holiday season

are seeing that the village's roads remain safe this holiday season.

The local police force is upping DWI patrols in the winter months, a period when drunk driving becomes more frequent, said Michael O'Shea, Piermont's police chief. Police cruisers will seek out erratic drivers and take them off the road.

"It's the biggest killer of young Americans," he added. "Don't drink and drive—think before you go out, have a designated driver or call a cab."

The colder months also mark a crackdown on illegal and dangerous trucks passing through Piermont; local authorities teamed up with state police to nab dangerous truckers on 9W.

A Nov. 11 operation yielded 33 traffic violations. Additionally, two trucks were taken out of service and one arrest was made for operating a vehicle with a suspended license.

9W see around 10,000 vehicles a day, and many of them are commercial trucks, O'Shea said. Piermont residents living on the thoroughfare often complain of dangerous trucks, he added.
