Piermont Police Crack Down on 9W Vans, Trucks

21 tickets issued in four hours; 4 vehicles taken off the road completely

issued 21 tickets in four hours this morning to commercial vehicles on Route 9W.

Authorities set up a check point on the road from 8 a.m. to noon and inspected a total of 21 vans and trucks that passed through. Police checked the automobiles' lights, brakes, hoses and tires—and if an element was not up to code, the driver was issued a ticket.

"We're concerned about unsafe trucks," explained Michael O'Shea, Piermont's chief of police. O'Shea noted 9W—which passes through a highly residential portion of Piermont—can see up 10,000 vehicles each day.

"We have to get the dangerous ones off the road," he added, noting some of the vehicles inspected can weigh over 10 tons or carry hazardous materials and chemicals.

Piermont Police carried out the initiative with the help of New York State Police, and also took a total of four vehicles out of commission.
