Nyack Woman Indicted on Food Stamp Fraud Charge

Shameta Williams, 37, of  36 S. Broadway, Nyack, faces charges of third degree grand larceny and misuse of food stamps, food stamp program coupons and electronic access devices, according to the Rockland County District Attorney's office.

Williams was indicted Feb. 26 by a Rockland County Grand Jury.

District Attorney Thomas P. Zugibe said that between Jan. 7, 2011 and Jan. 8, 2013 Williams used her SNAP Benefit Card to purchase prohibited items and exchanged her benefits for cash at the Nyack Food Mart.

The total amount exceeded $3,000.

Editor's Note: Williams is 37; her age was incorrect in the original version of this report. Patch regrets the error.

Shemeta ? It's Shemeka....a very common African-American name. No spell checking by the Patch ?

General, that's the spelling the DA's office gave me. I'm double checking with them now.

@Lanning....oh sorry, perhaps it is correct.

@ Genrl Quarters, What's an error in a name have to do with race?

I dont think this is the exception - Nyack Food Mart has been under scrutiny for this I think

General, Powell, according to the DA's office, that is the correct spelling.

Pretty sure the age is wrong.

Thanks for catching that typo, Bruce. It's fixed.

Can someone please look into why the county only targets poor communities? New Square by far is the largest drain and fraud in this regard but the DA refuses to look that way.
