Nyack Fire District Election Today

Two former chiefs running for commissioner's post.

Residents of the Nyack Joint Fire District today vote to elect a new commissioner for the district, which oversees the financial operations of the Nyack Fire Department.

Residents can cast their ballots between 3 p.m. and 9 p.m. at either the Nyack Senior Center, 60 Depew Ave., or at the central fire station at 15 Park St.

The volunteer fire commissioner post is a five-year term and is part of a board that oversees the fire district, which covers Nyack, South Nyack, Upper Nyack and Upper Grandview. The district  stretches into two towns, Orangetown and Clarkstown.

The fire district is the taxing authority that raising the funds necessary to operate the fire department, which is composed 100 percent of volunteers. The fire commissioners do not oversee the day-to-day operations of the fire department — which is done by the line officers elected by members of the fire department.

This year, two men are running for a commissioner position: former-chiefs Jim Scully and Jay Phillips.

The winner of the election will replace current commissioner Richard Matteson, who has been involved with the fire district since its creation 12 years ago.

Residents of the district living south of Main Street in Nyack can cast their votes at 60 Depew Ave.; Nyackers living north of Main Street — all the way up to Hook Mountain — cast their votes at 15 Park St.
