[UPDATE] Downtown Nyack Apartment Damaged by Fire

No one injured in fire that may have been started by ashtray; Main Street blocked off for about an hour as firefighters battle blaze above Casa del Sol restaurant.

A fire that may have been started by an ashtray that was knocked over damaged a downtown Nyack apartment and shut down traffic on Main Street for about an hour Tuesday night, according to Orangetown Police.

No one was reported injured.

Police said the fire in a second-floor apartment at 37 New St. was reported at about 7:10 p.m. The apartment, located above the Casa del Sol restaurant, was extinguished by volunteers of the Nyack Fire Department.

Police said there was minimal damage caused by the fire, although there was also smoke damage and damage from water used in the firefighting effort. The fire brought about the closure of Main Street from Bridge Street to Broadway as firefighters battled the blaze.

New Street is immediately north of Main Street, and runs from Broadway to Park Street. While the fire was at 37 New St., the front of the restaurant is on Main Street.

Police said the fire does not appear to be suspicious, with an accident with an ashtray suspected as a possible cause of the fire.
