NJ Woman Accused of Vehicular Assault In Head-On Crash

Two drivers, two passengers taken to Nyack Hospital after 4 a.m. wreck on Route 59 in Central Nyack.

A New Jersey woman faces vehicular assault charges after an early-morning accident Sunday in which she is accused of driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol and slamming head-on into another car on Route 59, according to Clarkstown police.

The woman, a passenger in her car, and the driver and a passenger in another car had to be taken to Nyack Hospital after the 4:10 a.m. crash in Central Nyack. Police said the driver of the car that was hit sustained a severe compound fracture of his right leg and his front seat passenger was knocked out and left bleeding heavily from the crash.

Police said Angela Spirou, 22, of Washington Township, NJ, was driving a 2004 Audi westbound on Route 59 near the Palisades Volkswagon and Palisades Audi auto dealerships when she passed another car on its right side. Police said Spirou’s car struck the curb and as she reacted she overcompensated and went into an eastbound lane of traffic — slamming into a 2007 Honda driven by a 26-year-old Congers man.

The Congers man had a male passenger, 23, and two 17-year-old female passengers in the car. Spirou had a male passenger in her car.

Police said the driver of the Honda was trapped in the car because of the severity of his injuries. The crash victims were assisted by Clarkstown police, members of Rockland Paramedics, and volunteers from the Nyack, South Orangetown and Congers-Valley Cottage ambulance squads. All four victims were taken to Nyack Hospital for treatment.

Police said a sample of Spirou’s blood was taken for analysis as part of the investigation of the crash. Spirou was later arraigned by Town Judge Scott B. Ugell and released on $1,000 bail pending an Oct. 3 hearing in Clarkstown Town Court. Spirou is charged with vehicular assault, a felony, and operating a vehicle under the influence of drugs or alcohol, a misdemeanor.

I'm worried that I live in a town whose elected officials turn a blind eye to the incredible problems caused by the bars. Both mayoral candidates have just wrung their hands and said, gosh, nothing can be done...
