New City Man Accused Of DWI, Violating Leandra's Law After West Nyack Accident

Three children were in the car, none were injured.

A New City man who had three children in his car when he was involved with a two-car accident in West Nyack has been charged with drunken driving and violating Leandra's Law, according to Clarkstown police.

Nat Azznara, 46, was ordered held in the Rockland County Correctional Facility in New City without bail as a result of the 10:30 a.m. accident Monday at Route 59 and Crosfield Avenue.

Police said Azznara's 2002 Oldsmobile struck the rear of another car on the eastbound side of Route 59 as the state highway narrows to one lane because of ongoing state construction in the area. Police said the lead car was slowing down to enter the construction zone.

The occupants of the first car complained of neck injury but refused medical attention, police said, noting that Azznara and the children in his car were not injured. Police said the three children included a 16-year-old and two 11-year-olds.

There was minor damage to both vehicles.

While investigating the accident, police said Azznara appeared to be intoxicated  and then failed a field sobriety test. He was taken to Clarkstown police headquarters in New City, where police said he failed a chemical breath test for alcohol.

Azznara was arraigned in Town Court in New City and ordered held at the county jail, without bail, pending a hearing on Friday. He is accused of driving while intoxicated as a felony for violating Leandra's Law, and aggravated driving while intoxicated, a misdemeanor.

Leandra's Law makes it a felony to drive while intoxicated with children in the vehicle.
