New City Man, 21, Charged with DWI at Checkpoint in Nyack

Cops: Driver tried to go around police checkpoint.

A 21-year-old New City man who tried to go around a police checkpoint set up on Main Street in Nyack early this morning was charged with drunken driving, according to Orangetown police.

Joseph A. Colon, of Badger St., New City, was stopped by police at 2:22 a.m. today as part of a stepped-up enforcement effort of state laws against drinking and driving. However, police said that as Colon approached the police checkpoint he tried to drive a 2004 Honda CRV around police officers.

Police said Colon was stopped and he then failed a field sobriety test. Colon was taken to Orangetown Police Headquarters in Orangeburg, whe police said he failed a chemical breath test for alcohol.

Colon was charged with driving while intoxicated, a misdemeanor, and was later released pending a Sept. 25 hearing in Nyack Village Court.

This was the in Nyack in the stepped up enforcement effort, which is funded by the Rockland County STOP DWI program. A Suffern man was charged with DWI at 2:39 a.m. Friday after he was stopped for traffic violations on Broadway.

I guess better late than never. LaCorte is serving his 4th year as Mayor and was Trustee for I thinkRead More 4 years before that. This year is the only time he has brought the idea to the village about participating in this program. He is motivated by the opportunity of getting positive press for his County Executive campaign. The village should have been involved in this program ( as well as the Americorps program) long before this. On a positive note, hopefully the Village will continue this worthwhile partnership for many years to come.
