Late-Night Fire Call In Nyack: Rice And A Sack Of Potatoes

Unusual false alarm at downtown restaurant.

are accustomed to false alarms, but early this morning they ran into one that was out of the ordinary.

An alarm went off about 1 a.m. at restuarant, 110 Main St., and when firefighters arrived they saw what looked like smoke in the back of the . However, in a few moments firefighters realized there was no fire.

Instead, what they saw was steam from a rice cooker and by coincidence a 5-pound sack of potatoes had fallen onto a fire extinguisher in the restaurant. The potatoes fell in such a way that it landed on the extinguisher's handle, discharging the entire contents of dry chemical powder.

No one was injured. Main Street was blocked for about 30 minutes as firefighters investigated the alarm.

Firefighters, however, were happy that the incident was not a repeat of the night before, when someone signaled four false alarms within a few minutes. In that incident, firefighters said someone was going across Nyack and pulling the handles on fire alarm boxes.

The night before last around midnight the fire horn was going off constantly for about 20 minutes. Now I know why it happened. This is one more reason to crack down on the drunken crowds in Nyack at night. I see them standing around on the sidewalk outside bars in the "sidewalk cafe" area with their drinks and beers. This is against the code, how about enforcing the law and writing them citations. They are welcome to stay in the bar and drink or sit at a table but groups of drunks standing outside drinking are bound to get into trouble at some point.

Something is odd about a sack of potatoes activating a fire extinguisher. What about the pin? It is a good thing that it will be replaced.

Did anybody hear the siren last night, about 3:00 am? We should all join the volunteer fire dept., since the whole village is up, too!
