House Fire In Nyack Requires Multiple Fire Departments to Extinguish

A house fire at 20 Prospect St. in Nyack has destroyed portions of the home's second and third floors.

The fire began at approximately 4:30 p.m. and was completely extinguished around 6 p.m.

"No one was injured," said Robert Booth, the Nyack Fire Chief. "Only three people were in the home when the fire began."

The fire department is currently investigating the cause of the fire, he added.

The affected areas in the home have been gutted; authorities are removing debris from inside, and much of the siding has burned away. Firefighters used the engine's ladder to combat flames on the top floor.

The building is split into apartments and houses five families, a resident who lives on the ground floor said. Everyone was evacuated when the fire began.

Prospect Street, along with neighboring roads, has been closed down for emergency vehicle access.

Fire authorities from Central Nyack, Piermont, Valley Cottage and Congers are currently assisting, along with South Nyack/Grand View Police and several EMS units.

The 80-degree heat had firefighters shedding their equipment when they could, and swigging water brought out by neighbors.
