Fire Officials: Remaining Smoke in Orangeburg Nothing Major

The Orangeburg Fire Department continued to receive calls Tuesday about smoke within the area burned by the large brush fire on Clausland Mountain, though the cause was nothing unexpected.

"What's happening is people are still smelling smoke," Orangeburg Fire Chief Neil Lynady said. "There are still some hot spots, tree stumps and stuff. They smell smoke and call it in. The mountain burned for five days. You're going to have that.

"It's nothing. It's something small in the middle."

Lynady said that the hot spots are unlikely to spread due to the location in areas burned out by the blaze, which started last Thursday and burned an estimated 359 acres of parkland through the weekend.

The Orangeburg Fire Department turned over monitoring of the area to park rangers Sunday.

The Rockland County Legislature Public Safety Commmittee will hold a meeting to discuss the response to the fire Dec. 10.
