Downtown Incident Leads to DWI Arrest in Nyack

Police: Haverstraw man almost drove into a police car.

A Haverstraw man was charged with drunk driving after a traffic violation and nearly hitting a police car, according to Orangetown Police.

Police said Richard Marrero, 22, of 1409 Round Point Drive, Haverstraw, was seen going through at stop sign on Artopee Way at about 4:19 a.m. Saturday. Town police stopped Marrero on Burd Street, but police said that in the process of being stopped Marrero put the 2003 Honda Accord he was driving into reverse and nearly drove into the front of a town police car.

Police said Marrero failed several field sobriety tests and he was taken to Orangetown Police Headquarters in Orangeburg, where he refused to take a chemical breath test for alcohol. Marrero was charged with driving while intoxicated, a misdemeanor, and was issued violations for going through a stop sign, unsafe backing and refusing to take the breath test.
