If you ride a bike on 9W, you have a death wish. The road is too narrow in many parts and is just not safe. I am nervous driving on car on parts of it.

What a ridiculous, irresponsible comment - I live in the area and everyday i have to contend with bicyclists who do not obey the single file law and ride their bikes in the middle of the street. If you turn onto a road with a bicyclist, person, animal in the middle of street, the fault is not of the driver.
Mike September 20, 2012 at 09:52 pm
These bicyclest don't have any regard for the cars around them. I live in Piermont and deal with these guys everyday. Riding on the streets that they do, and in the manner that they ride,, I shocked more aren't killed or hurt. How many of them are going to have to die before they get it. BTW... I know the ups driver , and the police report states it was the bicyclest fault.
Issy September 20, 2012 at 10:20 pm
Whether the cyclist is at fault is to be decided, but in any given cyclist/driver encounter the motorist has the ability to better control the situation. With better acceleration, braking, speed and road position the motorist is better able to affect change in an event with a cyclist.
While most understand this, a few choose to use their vehicles as an extension of their ego and put aside the laws of physics (and NY State Laws) to 'punish' cyclists for what some apparent 'jerk' did to them on Piermont Avenue six months ago.

I also live in Piermont and it is a continuing struggle with the bicyclists. They have no regard for the rules of the road or other motorists.. 9W should not be a bike path....it is dangerous and there is no room to share the road!!
barry pagz September 21, 2012 at 12:27 pm
The heading should read cycilist hits a truck when he turned off 9w onto Rockland road. Bicyclist struck a ups truck in sparkill. You should find out all the facts before writing a false article Kevin zawacki. I live in piermont and these cycilist are out of control. They Dont abIde by the laws they should be following they run red lights they speed down hills they curse at motorist. Again Dont print false articles Kevin.

The NYS sdigns installed say "Share the Road" that cyclists think only applies to motor vehicles and not them. The majority of those previously weighing in are absolutely correct. I watched a group going east on Oak Tree Road riding abreast across the entire lane. Blow a horn so you can pass safely and all you get curses and obscene gestures.

Someone mentioned the police report. That would be excellent journalism to get the police report (a public record) to publish it here and take some of the speculation out of the news of this incident. Not that police reports are the last word on what happened, but they do provide additional information.

Human beings drive cars, ride bikes, jog, walk, push baby strollers and walk their dogs. Let's be as careful as possible, so no one gets hurt going about their day.

Route 9w is entirely too narrow for bicycles to use in the area around Sparkill, Piermont up to Nyack. I find it difficult to leave a 3 foot space as I pass a bike because cars are coming towards me and there's a double line indicating no passing. Bikes should not use 9W in this area but stick to Piermont/River Road which has a 25 mph speed limit and would be much safer. We need to get this info out to the bike clubs that ride up this way. Most of the bikers I see are keeping to the side but there's not much shoulder. It's simply not a safe road to ride a bike on. As for jogging, or pushing strollers on 9W, that is simply ridiculous and unsafe at any rate.

Your answer is quite excessive = many of the riders are respectful of the rules, a few bad apples everywhere and in every activity and profession. Exaggeration ruins your comments. I'd respect you more if you actually spent several hours on a weekend tallying the number of actual bikers, number who misbehave in their riding or behavior and also behavior of the cars and trucks. At least your response would show an attenpt to truly get at the facts and not just ranting wildly.

There are bad cyclists and bad drivers. Those few that are, should not spoil it for the rest..
Marty Jacobson September 21, 2012 at 06:14 pm
Whether the bike hits the truck or the trick hits the bike, the bike(r) gets the worst of it. I agree with all the comments about the danger of 9W and the bikers who disrespect the rules of the road. That being said, many of the accidents are caused by drivers who are too impatient to wait for a safe time to pass a biker.

They need to issue tickets to people on bikes that don't ride correctly. Yesterday evening, there was a woman riding on Central Higway in Stony Point and she was riding against the traffic on the left side of the road. She was going head on with another cyclist and he made a nasty remark to her. This woman was not wearing a helmet and we were getting honked at waiting to make a left hand turn so she could pass the intersection fo Filors Road. I guess the driver behind us would have preferred that she get mowed down by an SUV,

Pedestrians have issues with cyclists too. Many of the cyclists don't stop when approaching a stop sign or a red light and don't yield to a pedestrian in a crosswalk. I have dodged a few cyclists recently when walking my dog. Bottomline in my opinion is that many cyclists want their right to the road upheld but don't feel the need to obey the laws that vehicles are required to do.

I'm always facinated by the law-and-order attitude people espouse in these cycling articles. I'm all for it... for everyone... but I don't think those calling for it truly are. NOBODY (okay, next to nobody) drives the speed limit as if it's the limit. Instead, "keeping up with traffic" is the rule. The reality out on the roads is not law and order, but mob rule... and the misbehaving bikes interfere with the misbehaving cars are part of a different mob.
As a cyclist I believe cyclists need to behave better to earn a little repect in sharing the road. That said, SHARING ISN'T EASY; a cyclist riding legally and courteously is still going to be an obstacle for a car to pass on most roads.

Aerial of United Water's proposed water treatment plant location
West Nyack June 13, 2013 at 07:03 pm
This issue is not whether Rockland County will need more water in the future which it may nor is itRead More the fact that Hudson River water can be made drinkable which it can. The primary issue is the company that wants to run the project. United Water has been a lousy corporate neighbor to West Nyack allowing old homes to deteriorate then tearing them down and doing nothing to stop the flooding south of the reservoir. If we allow them to construct the Haverstraw project they will do nothing to protect the area and if anything goes wrong they will blame someone else. When United Water starts to take responsibility for its actions and manages their facilities so as to have a minimal impact on the community then maybe they should be allowed to build Haverstraw but don't count on it.
Caleb June 13, 2013 at 10:23 pm
Untrue. Perhaps if United Water wasn't sending over 2 million gallons a day from Deforest Lake toRead More they're customers in Bergen County we would not have this shortage. Hydrologists have shown that there is enough water regularly collected in Rockland's reservoirs and aquifers for our current and growing needs. Many of the "facts" that United Water is putting forward are outdated, and are based on they're own mismanagement of our water basin. Lets remember that United Water has repeatedly been removed as a water provider of major cities throughout this country (6+ last time I checked, notably even from Camden NJ) for mismanagement of water resources. I think its a prudent choice to look into a plant that we will be stuck paying for for the next 4 years from a company that has repeatedly lied and provided water with toxin levels high above legal limits to they're customers. Better safe than sorry.
John Taggart June 13, 2013 at 11:59 pm
Rockland has grown to the point that it needs more water. Terminating the flow of a river and takingRead More the water resources away from other communities (stealing what we need) isn't going to happen.
