Car Burns on Thruway in South Nyack

Vehicle was being towed when fire broke out at construction lot

Nyack volunteer firefighters were called out to the New York State Thruway in South Nyack Tuesday afternoon to battle a fire that broke out in a car that was being towed.

The tow truck stopped at the construction lot on the northbound side of the Thruway. Nyack Fire Chief James Petriello said no one was injured in the incident.

Petriello said the car had been donated to charity and was being towed behind a flatbed truck that was carrying another vehicle.

"The tow truck driver was lucky that he didn't have two cars on fire," Petriello said. "He managed to unhook the car that was on fire just as we pulled up."

The car was destroyed by the fire.

It was the second time Tuesday that Nyack volunteers responded to an automobile emergency on the Thruway. Earlier in the day, a report of a possible car fire on the Thruway southbound just south of the Exit 11 ramps turned out to be a fuel leak.

Petriello said the car apparently struck debris on the roadway and its fuel tank was ruptured. There was no fire in this incident and no one was injured.
